The fantastic city of Los Angeles not only brings together great artists and movie stars, it also has one of the most famous airports in the world. LAX airport for MSFS by FeelThere is one of those must have sceneries.
Background
Los Angeles International Airport is the main air terminal in this Californian city. It is popularly known as LAX by Californians (and also by the rest of the world) and is located to the southwest, in the West Chester neighborhood, 27 kilometers from Los Angeles downtown.
It is one of the most important pieces of the economic infrastructure of Southern California, being the second busiest airport in the United States and the sixth in the world. LAX is also the busiest airport of origin and destination (not as a stopover) in the world.
Layout, sectors, runways…
The layout of the Los Angeles airport runways is designed to be as efficient as possible. Its four parallel runways make it possible to use any of them almost at the same time as the others, allowing a high rate of takeoffs and landings. Although all runways (in both directions) have Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), those that are towards the center and closest to the terminals are usually used for takeoffs and the outer ones for landings.
The operation is divided into two large sectors (north and south) and a single control tower serves the four runways, which are managed by individual ground controllers. Ground movement is quite complex and challenging due to its layout and the number of operations. For example, airplanes landing on runway 25L may hold off several minutes waiting for clearance to cross runway 25R and go to the gate. So be patient and be sure to follow the ground control instructions exactly.
This airport has a famous building and is undergoing a large modernization process that will end in 2023. The Theme building is one of the most recognizable architectural icons in the city, resembling a spaceship with intersecting arches.
Spotters dream
Another thing that is also a show is the airport’s own operation, a meeting place for countless spotters who take spectacular shots of the planes landing and taking off. Normally the airport operates with the westbound configuration, that is, using runways 24 L / R and 25 L / R, landing after having flown over the city and taking off towards Santa Monica Bay in the Pacific Ocean.
Speaking of famous places, there is one that is precisely because it is located in an unbeatable place to appreciate the traffic at LAX, especially the planes approaching runway 24R. The In-N-Out hamburger place usually appears in the photos or videos of the spotters, when the planes in short final appear over their billboard.
